Roofing FAQ
Straight answers to the questions Sonoma County homeowners actually ask.
Cost & Pricing
How much does a new roof cost in Sonoma County?
Architectural shingle replacement on a typical 2,000 sqft home runs $14,000–$22,000. Standing-seam metal runs $32,000–$48,000. See our full cost guide for the seven factors that move that number.
Why are roofing bids so different?
Usually because they're not bidding the same job. Ask each bidder to itemize underlayment, fastener type, decking allowance, and ventilation upgrades — the bids become comparable.
Is the lowest bid the best deal?
Almost never. The cheapest bid usually skipped tear-off, used 15-lb felt, or didn't budget for decking repair. Compare apples to apples.
Do you offer financing?
We work with several financing partners. Specific programs change — call (707) 232-8622 for current options.
Process & Timeline
How long does a roof replacement take?
Two to four working days for shingle, three to five for metal, four to seven for tile, on a typical 2,000 sqft home.
Do I need to be home during the work?
No — most homeowners aren't. We just need driveway and side-yard access.
What if it rains during my project?
We watch the forecast. Your home is dried-in (underlayment installed) within 24 hours of tear-off, no exceptions. We tarp full roof if a system arrives mid-job.
Do you pull the permit?
Yes. Every re-roof in every Sonoma County jurisdiction requires a permit. We pull it, schedule inspections, and handle the paperwork.
Materials
What's the difference between architectural and 3-tab shingles?
Architectural shingles are laminated for thicker dimension and 25–30 year service life. 3-tab is flat and shorter-lived. We install architectural exclusively.
Is metal roofing noisy in the rain?
On a house with full deck, underlayment, attic, and insulation — no, barely perceptible difference vs. shingle.
Should I worry about my wood-shake roof?
Yes if you're in a fire zone. Untreated wood shake is no longer permitted on new installs in High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and most carriers will require replacement at renewal.
Warranty
What warranty do you offer?
Manufacturer warranties on materials (typically 25–50 years on shingle, 30+ on metal) plus our 10-year written workmanship warranty on installation.
Is the warranty transferable if I sell?
Manufacturer warranties typically transfer once with notification. Our workmanship warranty transfers within the original term — see warranty page for details.
Insurance
Will insurance pay for my roof?
Only if damage is from a covered event (wind, hail, falling tree). Aging is excluded. See our insurance claims guide.
Will replacing my roof help me keep my homeowners insurance?
Often, yes — particularly in fire zones. Documented Class A roof age and condition is increasingly required for renewal in California's tight market.
Should I file a claim for storm damage?
Only if repair cost exceeds your deductible meaningfully. We'll tell you honestly which side of the line you're on.
Maintenance
How often should I have my roof inspected?
Every 2–3 years for any roof over 10 years old; annually for any roof over 20; after every major wind event regardless of age.
Should I clean moss off my roof myself?
Light cases yes — soft brush or oxygen-bleach treatment. Never pressure wash. Heavy moss usually means underlying damage that needs professional assessment.
Do you clean gutters?
We clear roof debris from gutters as part of every install. We're not a recurring gutter-cleaning service for general leaf buildup.
Sonoma County Specific
Are wood-shake roofs still legal here?
Not on new installs in High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, which cover most of east Healdsburg, Glen Ellen, hills above Santa Rosa, and the Mayacamas.
How do I know if I'm in a wildfire zone?
Check CAL FIRE's Fire Hazard Severity Zone viewer or ask us — we know the local maps and can confirm during an estimate.
Do you serve all of Sonoma County?
Yes — Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, Windsor, Sebastopol, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Sonoma, Cloverdale, Geyserville, Cotati, and rural areas in between.
