Architectural asphalt shingle is still the right call for most Sonoma County homes. It's affordable, fits traditional architecture, achieves a Class A fire rating, and — with the right install — runs 25 to 30 years in our climate.
The catch is that shingle quality varies dramatically by installer. The same product on the same roof will last 28 years installed correctly and 14 installed wrong. We've torn off both.
Overview
We're a CertainTeed ShingleMaster certified installer, which means CertainTeed has audited our installation work and stands behind it with their highest-tier extended warranty — coverage that includes both materials and labor for warranty repairs. That certification is held by a small fraction of contractors in the Sonoma County market.
Our standard shingle install includes synthetic underlayment (not 15-lb felt), ice and water shield in all valleys and around penetrations, drip edge along every eave and rake, and code-balanced ridge or static venting. We pull a permit on every job and schedule the mid-job inspection with your jurisdiction.
Materials & Options
Architectural shingles (the workhorse)
Multi-dimensional laminated shingles in the 30-year category — what we install on roughly 70% of our re-roofs. Wind resistance up to 130 mph when installed with six nails per shingle, algae-resistant granules, and Class A fire rating in proper assembly. Realistic Sonoma County service life: 22–28 years.
Designer / luxury shingles
Heavier laminated shingles that mimic slate, shake, or barrel-tile profiles. Lifetime limited warranty, deeper shadow lines, and roughly 50–80% more expensive than architectural. Right call for higher-end homes around the Healdsburg Plaza, Fountaingrove rebuilds, and Glen Ellen estates where curb appeal pays back at resale.
Manufacturer warranty tiers
Every shingle carries the manufacturer's basic limited warranty. CertainTeed SureStart and SureStart Plus add coverage for tear-off and disposal, longer non-prorated periods, and (with ShingleMaster install) workmanship coverage. We register every install for the highest warranty tier the homeowner qualifies for.
Sonoma County–Specific Shingle Concerns
We frame every shingle recommendation around three local realities:
- UV intensity inland — Healdsburg, Windsor, eastern Santa Rosa attics regularly hit 140°F+ in August. Cool-roof colors and balanced ventilation matter more than the shingle brand.
- Marine moisture and moss in the west — Sebastopol, Occidental, Forestville. Algae-resistant granules and zinc strips at the ridge are part of every west-county install we do.
- Wildfire fire rating — Class A fire rating is mandatory in High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and the rating depends on the entire assembly, not just the shingle.
Our Process
- Free on-site estimate, attic walk-through, and written proposal within 48 hours.

- Field shingles installed with proper exposure and nailing pattern, flashings at every penetration, ridge cap.
- Magnetic sweep, final walk-through, mid-job and final inspections.

Pricing
Architectural shingle re-roof on a typical 2,000 sqft Sonoma County home runs $14,000 to $22,000 fully installed — including tear-off, synthetic underlayment, and code-required upgrades. Premium and designer shingles run $22,000 to $32,000 for the same footprint. See the full cost guide for the seven factors that move that number.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between architectural and 3-tab shingles?
Architectural (or 'dimensional') shingles are laminated for a thicker, multi-tone appearance and longer life. 3-tab shingles are flat, single-layer, cheaper, and shorter-lived. We install architectural exclusively — 3-tab no longer makes financial sense in Sonoma County's market.
Do you offer Class 4 impact-resistant shingles?
Yes, on request. Class 4 shingles can qualify for insurance discounts in some markets, though hail damage isn't a major Sonoma County concern. We can pull manufacturer specs and discuss whether the cost premium pencils out for your situation.
How many layers can I have on my roof?
California allows up to two layers in most jurisdictions, but we strongly recommend tear-off. An overlay hides bad decking, shortens new-roof life, and complicates manufacturer warranties. The labor savings rarely cover the long-term cost.
What ventilation should I add during a re-roof?
Most pre-2000 Sonoma County homes are under-vented. Adding a continuous ridge vent or rebalancing intake/exhaust during a re-roof typically costs $400–$1,200 and meaningfully extends shingle life. We assess attic ventilation as part of every estimate.
Will my new shingle roof match my neighbor's?
If your neighbor used the same manufacturer, profile, and color, very closely. We bring color samples to every estimate so you can see options on your house in actual sunlight before you commit.
How long does a typical shingle install take?
Two to three working days for a standard 2,000 sqft single-story home. Larger or more complex roofs (multiple dormers, hip-and-valley layouts, attached garage) may run a full week.
Is the CertainTeed warranty really better?
Yes — measurably. The SureStart Plus warranty (only available through ShingleMaster certified installers like us) covers materials AND labor for non-prorated periods. Most other manufacturer warranties cover materials only after the first few years.
