Metal Roofing in Sonoma County, CA

Class A wildfire-rated metal systems built to last 50+ years.

A properly installed standing-seam metal roof in Sonoma County will outlast its owner. We've inspected metal roofs put down in the 1970s that still have decades left — same can't be said for the asphalt roofs installed next door in 2003.

Metal isn't right for every home. But in fire zones, on hillsides, on contemporary or farmhouse architecture, and for anyone planning to stay 15+ years, it's almost always the better long-term value.

    Overview

We install three types of metal roofing across Sonoma County: standing-seam panels (24-gauge steel with concealed fasteners), exposed-fastener corrugated panels for ag and outbuilding use, and stamped metal shingles that mimic slate or shake. Every system we install carries a Class A fire rating when paired with the right underlayment, a major factor for homes in the High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones that cover most of east Healdsburg, Glen Ellen, the hills above Santa Rosa, and the Mayacamas.

Color choices matter more than most homeowners realize. Cool-roof tones in our standard Kynar 500 / PVDF finish reflect 30–60% of solar heat back into the atmosphere, dropping attic temperatures by 10–20°F during August inland heat waves. That translates to lower cooling bills and longer underlayment life.

    Materials & Options

    Standing-seam metal (the recommendation)

Continuous panels run from eave to ridge with raised seams that lock together — no exposed fasteners in the field. We work primarily in 24-gauge steel because the heavier gauge resists oil-canning and dents better than 26-gauge in our climate. Snap-lock seams for most residential work; mechanically seamed panels for low-slope or extreme-exposure roofs.

    Exposed-fastener corrugated

Half to a third the cost of standing-seam, with a useful service life of 25–35 years before the gasketed screws need replacement. Right answer for ag buildings, detached shops, and outbuildings across rural Sonoma — wrong answer for most occupied homes, where the visible fastener pattern dates the building and the screws are an inevitable maintenance item.

    Metal shingles and tiles

Stamped panels that mimic the look of slate, wood shake, or barrel tile. A reasonable choice for traditional architecture in fire zones where homeowners want metal performance without the contemporary look — but more expensive per square foot than standing-seam and with a more complex flashing detail set.

    Finishes & color

We spec Kynar 500 / PVDF coating on every residential metal job. It's the most fade-resistant architectural finish available, with 30+ year manufacturer color warranties. Standard palette runs about 24 colors; custom is available.

    Our Process

    1. On-site measurement and material consultation — we walk the roof, photograph the existing assembly, and discuss color, profile, and ventilation upgrades.
    2. Written, line-item proposal within 48 hours.
    3. Permit pulled through your jurisdiction (Permit Sonoma, City of Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, etc.).
    4. Material delivered, custom panels fabricated to length.
    5. Tear-off of existing roof (typically 1 day on a single-story home).
    6. Decking inspection and repair as needed; ice and water shield in valleys, synthetic underlayment across the field.
    7. Panel install, flashings at every penetration, ridge cap.
    8. Mid-job and final inspections by your jurisdiction.
    9. Warranty registration — manufacturer and our 10-year workmanship warranty.

    Pricing

Standing-seam metal in Sonoma County typically runs $32,000 to $48,000 installed on a 2,000 sqft single-story home with moderate complexity. Exposed-fastener corrugated runs roughly $22,000 to $30,000 for the same footprint. Final number depends on roof pitch, accessibility, decking condition, and color.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will a metal roof make my house hotter?

Opposite. A light- or mid-tone Kynar 500 finish reflects far more solar radiation than asphalt shingles. Most homeowners report attic temperatures dropping 10–20°F after switching from dark shingle to a cool-roof metal color.

Is metal noisier in the rain?

On a barn with no insulation, yes. On a house with full plywood deck, synthetic underlayment, an attic, and ceiling insulation, the difference versus shingle is barely perceptible. Most homeowners stop noticing after the first storm.

How long does metal really last in Sonoma County?

Realistic field service life is 45–60 years for 24-gauge standing-seam in our climate. Some maintenance — pipe boots, exposed sealants — every 10–15 years extends that further. The metal itself outlasts everything around it.

Can metal go over my existing shingles?

We don't recommend it. Hidden moisture and uneven surfaces shorten panel life and complicate manufacturer warranties. Tear off, inspect the deck, install fresh underlayment, then panels.

Does metal qualify for an insurance discount?

Most California carriers — including the FAIR Plan — offer the same or better discounts for Class A metal as for any other Class A assembly. Several offer wildfire mitigation credits specifically for standing-seam metal in fire zones.

How long does a metal install take?

Typical 2,000 sqft single-story standing-seam project runs 3–5 working days from tear-off to final inspection, weather permitting. Complex roofs with dormers, multiple skylights, or extensive decking repair can run a full week.
